چکیده

background: feeding intolerance is a common problem among premature infants. there is limited information on the safety and effects of oral probiotic supplements, especially products containing lactobacillus reuteri, and the incidence of necrotizing enterocolitis (nec) in low birth weight preterm infants. this study aimed to evaluate the effects of lactobacillus reuteri on the gastrointestinal complications and feeding tolerance in premature infants. methods: this randomized triple-blind clinical trial was conducted on 60 premature infants divided into two groups of intervention and placebo. subjects in the intervention group received one drop/kg of supplementary oral probiotic with 0.5 ml of distilled water, and infants in the placebo group only received 0.5 ml of distilled water. probiotic administration continued to reach full enteral feeding. results: in this study, mean time to reach full enteral feeding was 12.83 and 16.75 days in the intervention and placebo groups, respectively, which was indicative of a significant difference (p=0.01). however, mean of neonatal weight at discharge had no significant difference between the two groups. in addition, 6.7% and 36.7% of infants in the intervention and placebo groups were diagnosed with nec, respectively, which showed a significant difference (p=0.005). also, prevalence of jaundice and sepsis was not significantly different between the study groups. conclusion: according to the results of this study, lactobacillus reuteri could reduce the time to reach full enteral feeding while diminishing the incidence of nec in very low birth weight premature infants.

Necrotizing Enterocolitis among Very-Low-Birth-Weight Infants in Korea

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is the most common gastrointestinal emergency and remains a major cause of mortality for very-low-birth-weight infants (VLBWI) requiring surgery. To date, there have been no large-scale studies evaluating the incidence, associated clinical factors and outcomes of NEC for VLBWI in Korea. The 2,326 VLBWI of a total 2,386 Korean Neonatal Network (KNN) cohort born wi...

Effect of routine probiotic, Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938, use on rates of necrotizing enterocolitis in neonates with birthweight < 1000 grams: a sequential analysis

BACKGROUND Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a disease in neonates, often resulting in death or serious medical or neurodevelopmental complications. The rate of NEC is highest in the smallest babies and many efforts have been tried to reduce the rate of NEC. In neonates born below 1500 grams, the rate of NEC has been significantly reduced with the use of various probiotics. This study examines...

Frequency of Thyroid Function Disorders among a Population of Very-Low-Birth-Weight Premature Infants

Background: Thyroid function disorders, particularly congenital hypothyroidism (CHT), are important endocrine dysfunctions associated with permanent morbidities. CHT is more prevalent among preterm low-birth-weight neonates compared to term infants with normal weight. Methods: This prospective cohort study was conducted on 126 very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) neonates referred to the neonatal inten...
